73 Questions (UPDATED)

1.  Why HR?

I did a summer school unit many years ago called “Introduction to Human Resource Management”.  I had absolutely no idea what it was about.  I ended up being the top-student in the class and went onto do post graduate studies.  That was 25 years ago and I’m still doing it.  Its a career that can take you all over the world and is a responsibility in contemporary organisations that I take most seriously. Such a privilege.

2. If I wasn’t an HR Director I would be…

Flying as long-haul international cabin crew.  It was always my dream to fly and to take care of people as they make their journeys in the sky. In many ways, HR has a lot of similarities particularly in regard to internal customer service as well as safety.

3. Pro-tip to other HR folk

Do a handful of things exceptionally well rather than trying to be everything to every internal customer.  This will best ensure that your HR service adds significant value to the business. And Remember the golden rule of HR 101: ‘right people in the right roles’.

4. Tea or Coffee?

I drink both – but I do start my day with a home-made Nespresso. I love Starbucks coffee too and my order is a grande size americano, made in a venti size cup, 3/4 full and with a splash of milk. I drink TWG earl grey, Silver Moon (SQ exclusive) and 1837.

5. Red or white?

Definitely red – generally a Syrah. Very keen to try the Shaw and Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz as well as the Torbreck RunRig (Barossa Valley).

6. Still or sparkling?

Always sparkling. If I won the lottery, I would treat myself to the PJ 2004 Belle Epoque.  Otherwise, you can’t beat No10 Brut Cuvee Chardonnay Pinot Noir at Dan’s.  It is less than $10 but could quite easily pass as French.  Be warned though: it can be very difficult to find as it is extremely popular!

7. Favourite city?

Los Angeles – I have always loved the city of angels, ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you this. I also love Singapore which has a very special place in the heart of me and my family (who live there). I might be a regular fixture on SQ 217 too 🙂

Just soap and water (Ba ha ha ha…).

You cannot be everyone’s’ friend all of the time. When you are an HR leader, you on occasion may need to intervene in someone’s decision making; tell a staff member something they may not want to hear or may even have to conclude someone’s employment.
