73 Questions

1.  Why HR?

I did a summer school unit many years ago called “Introduction to Human Resource Management”.  I had absolutely no idea what it was about.  I ended up being the top-student in the class and went onto do post graduate studies.  That was 25 years ago and I’m still doing it.  It’s been very good to me and I still thoroughly enjoy it.

2. If I wasn’t an HR Director I would be…

Flying as long-haul international cabin crew.  It was always my dream to fly and to take care of people as they make their journeys in the sky.

3. Pro-tip to other HR folk

Do a handful of things exceptionally well rather than trying to be everything to every internal customer.  This will best ensure that your HR service adds significant value to the business.

4. Tea or Coffee?

I drink both – but I do start my day with a home-made Nespresso. I love Starbucks coffee too and my order is a grande size americano, made in a venti size cup, 3/4 full and with a splash of milk.

5. Red or white?

Definitely red – generally a Syrah or a Cabernet Merlot. 

6. Still or sparkling?

Always sparkling.

7. Favourite city?

Los Angeles – I have always loved the city of angels, ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you this. Believe it or not, I actually like watching live Basketball and would love to see a Lakers game live in LA. Recently, an Aussie Basketballer delivered the most extraordinary half court buzzer! 

8. Travel bucket list?

Aqua Dome in the Austrian Alps.  

9. Fun fact about me

I am coeliac so I have to maintain a very strict gluten-free diet.

10. Quirky habit

I love vacuuming and I like to think that nobody can vacuum a room like I can. I have a ‘Henry’ too.

11. Exercise 

I’ve always been a swimmer and do my laps at least 3 times per week. In between that, I try to get to the gym for strengthening exercises as well.  I am a treadmill runner too.  

12. Self care

I’ve recently been trying Yoga-Nidra each day for 15 minutes when I wake up and before I head to sleep.

13. If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be?

My parents – though they live over the otherside of the country so it’s logistically difficult for us to do that as often as I’d like to be able to.

14. Place you would like to go back to 

India – there is so much more that I want to see and explore there.

15. Favourite place to visit locally

I’ve always loved Port Douglas in FNQ. I much enjoy short trips to Tasmania too.

16. Most annoying thing that you hear people say

‘They should look like sisters and not twins’…..if you know you know.

17. Summer or winter?

I much prefer cooler weather and just love the wintertime. That said though, I once visited the east coast of Canada in February and my understanding of real cold weather was changed forever!

18. Is it true you were Head Boy at school?

Yes – that is true (more than 25 years ago now). These days, I am pleased to see that they use more gender inclusive language these days (School Captain). It was a very early leadership experience that I am still immensely grateful for decades later.

19. Can you cook?

Yes I can. In fact, my guilty pleasure is watching home-chefs online. My favourite is the legendary Ina Garten – she is a joy to watch and cook along with. Any of my friends will tell you I am always sharing new recipes that I have made on the group WhatsApp. I have included a few happy snaps of my recent recipe re-creations 🙂 

20. Hobbies?

A work in progress for me – though soon I will work towards a professional qualification in wine (WSET Level 1). Otherwise, collecting model airplanes.

21. First job

I was crew at McDonalds. I later worked at both Myer and later David Jones selling Jeans.

22. Favourite show on Netflix

I loved Inventing Anna and thoroughly enjoyed both Uncoupled and Partner Track too. To be completely honest, I also don’t mind a bit of Selling the OC and recently binged watched the new series of Below Deck Australia on a long flight. Currently, I am hooked on Owning Manhattan and Buying London.

23. Carpet or Floorboards?

Definitely carpet.

24. 1 king or 2 doubles?

Always 2 doubles (and 2 sinks too if at all possible).

25. Fragrance

Platinum Egoiste which I have spritzed on pretty much every day since my mother purchased it for me for the first time in Georgetown (Penang) when I was a young teen. 

26. Do you have a pet?

Not yet – though I am increasingly keen to get a doggie. Close friends of mine have the most beautiful greyhound. I also really like dachshunds.

27. Favourite food

I eat a lot of fish though I am not quite a pescatarian.

28. Most favourite item of clothing

My Reebok Pump shoes. I always wanted a pair back in the 80s but my folks wouldn’t let me have them! So many years later I finally bought a pair – they are so cool.

29. Valuable life lesson

I suffered a nasty neck injury some years ago that shook me to the core. It made me appreciate and value being able to do simple day to day things that we take for granted. I’m immensely grateful for all the fine health care professionals that helped me recover.

30. Indoors or outdoors?

Most certainly indoors. It is highly unlikely that you’ll ever find me out hiking or camping.

31. Healthiest habit?

I’ve recently started doing AG1 each morning and am loving it.

32. Who is your hero?

My Dad.

33. Have you ever had a nickname?

Yes I do – “DT”. Everyone who knows me calls me this.

34. Favourite colour

Red.

35. Least favourite colour

Green – it should never be seen lol.

36. Dream destination

My home.

37. Luggage

Rimowa (checked-in) and Tumi (Carry on).

38. Favourite flower(s) 

I like arum lilies. Simple, beautiful and shapely.   

39. In the garden…

I have always loved bright yellow marigolds and each year I like to have planter boxes of them on my balcony.

40. Favourite new gadget

I recently purchased a water flosser – highly recommend getting one of these. Life changing. 

41. Favourite fruit

Kiwi followed very closely by watermelon.

42. Shower or bath?

Definitely a bath (and if need be, shower over bath but never shower only).  

43. Maximalism or minimalism?

Definitely not minimalism.

44. A good movie you saw recently?

Any decent Rom Com.

45. Favourite weekend activity?

On a Sunday afternoon I love to go to my local cinema and watch a film whilst enjoying a nice glass of wine (Double Feature). Sometimes, I’ll treat myself to the platinum experience too and stretch out in a nice recliner to enjoy the show.

46. World challenge I wish I had a magic power to heal?

Homelessness.

47. Something you are very unlikely to ever see me eat.

Soup of any kind.

48. Favourite social activity?

My friends and I have an initiative called ‘postcode dining’. We set up a group WhatsApp chat and each month or so, we do a Friday or Saturday night dinner in someone else’s post code. It is a great way to try lots of different eateries in our respective locales. Plus we get to catch up and compare notes too which always involves a lot of laughs.

49. Rare, medium or well done?

Well-done.

50. Least favourite word?

‘Pivot’. I think we have all heard this word way too many times, particularly in recent years. Same comments apply re: “Ahmazing” too.

51. Favourite cocktail?

Gin and Tonic made with Tanqueray No 10.

52. Favourite quote?

‘True love can not be found where it truly does not exist nor can it be hidden where it truly does‘ (William Shakespeare).

53. Favourite restaurant?

Oh there are a handful and it depends on where I am!  Top of the list would be Nautilus (QLD), Windy Point (SA), Chez Piere (WA) and Otto (NSW). I also love Thai food at my local – the Golden Triangle (VIC).

54. Quality you most admire in others?

Perseverance.

55. Wise words that you have seen in action?

You get what you pay for. 

56. Dream car?

My neighbour has this massive Ford Raptor which I absolutely love to take for a spin!

57. Favourite beach?

I think that the Newport Coast in California is very beautiful. 

58. Favourite sweet?

I’m not much of a sweet tooth but I would probably say anything made with pistachio – such as panna cotta, pavlova, ice cream or even dark chocolate.

59. FOMO or JOMO?

Definitely JOMO.

60. Accent(s)?

Yes it is true, I have a unique ability to impersonate accents with British and NZ being my most believable. Ask anyone who knows me…

61. Something you did recently out of your comfort zone?

I actually re-grouted my shower and bathtub recently all by myself. 

62. Hardest part of being in HR?

You cannot be everyone’s’ friend all of the time. When you are an HR leader, you on occasion may need to intervene in someone’s decision making; tell a staff member something they may not want to hear or may even have to conclude someone’s employment.  

63. Something that made you laugh

I was once talking to a very clever fellow who did a meerkat impersonation. I’m not sure he even realised how funny it was at the time…but it still puts a smile on my face whenever I think back to that conversation.

64. Business or Economy class

Business Class (points + pay) or EconomyX for the additional leg room.

65. Interesting obsession

Linen spray.

66. A piece of advice you would give your younger self

Remember we are all experts in our own lives.

67. What was the last gift you gave someone?

A Myer gift card – you can’t go wrong with one of those 🙂 

68. Something that is always in your fridge

Sprite Zero (only ever in a can…tastes better in a can).

69. Product you can’t live without

Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant…have used it daily for over 20+ years now.

70. Next bucket-list item

I am planning to (finally) visit the In and Out Burger near LAX. 

71. Favourite Hotel

Being a self-confessed AV Geek, I like the Crowne Plaza (Singapore Changi Airport) and one day hope to stay at both the Fairmont YVR and the TWA Hotel at JFK.

72. Define luxury

Peace, quiet and sitting outside in the crisp air sipping a cup of homemade Nespresso. Simplicity = Pure bliss 🙂

Taking a nap in the late afternoon over the weekend – a real treat indeed 🙂
